| What does a periodontist do during an evaluation? |
|
They will measure six points on each tooth to see the depth of the gum pocket around the tooth. Depths from one to three millimeters generally are good. Four millimeters may indicate pathology. Usually, five millimeters or more indicates inflammation and bone loss. This information will be correlated with xrays of your teeth. The periodontist will also note bleeding on probing, tooth mobility and occlusion (your bite). They will give a report to your general dentist on treatment recommendations.
